In the time I have spent at UMBC as a CWIT Scholar, I have gained a new perspective on technology, a drive to overcome all obstacles, and a second family. CWIT has provided me with the support I needed to make it through difficult classes and see that I can truly thrive in my major. As a computer science major, I have always been interested in how my work can positively impact others. During my internship with MITRE, I worked with a devoted cybersecurity team who affirmed the importance of security to me, and exposed me to the life-changing work that a government contractor takes on. Working closely with the Army gave me the chance to see that security means protecting real people, at all hours of the day. In my current internship with eBay, I have taken my learned devotion to security, and applied it to the business side of the industry. Connecting all of the technical teams, and joining them under the common umbrella of security has given me the chance to really understand all of the aspects that contribute to a successful business. I would have never had the courage to move across the country for an internship if it wasn’t for the supportive people I met in CWIT, and I will be forever grateful for them to encouraging me to always get outside of my comfort zone.
