Industry Engagement with CWIT

Our Scholars and Affiliates benefit tremendously from meaningful and ongoing interactions with industry professionals working in many different technology sectors and roles. We are committed to creating opportunities for our students to meet and learn from successful women and members of other underrepresented groups working in engineering and computing positions.

Ways to Engage

Organizations and individuals can support and connect with CWIT in a variety of ways, including:

  • Serving as an industry mentor. Applications for the 2026-27 academic year are now available! (see more below).
  • Networking with CWIT Scholars and Affiliates (see more below)
  • Sponsoring CWIT Scholars and Affiliates to attend tech-related conferences
  • Providing financial support for CWIT programs and initiatives
  • Supporting our K-12 outreach events

Explore opportunities to support and engage with our community by reviewing the CWIT Engagement Information Sheet.

About the Program

Mentoring is an integral part of the CWIT Scholar experience. The Industry Mentoring Program pairs sophomores or junior year Scholars with experienced professionals who provide guidance on career exploration, professional development, and networking. Based on availability of mentors, CWIT Affiliates may also be offered the opportunity to participate in the program.

Mentors commit to one academic year (September–May) and are matched with students based on their expertise, industry, and the student’s goals. Many partnerships continue beyond the formal program.

Who Can Be a Mentor?

Industry professionals from private companies, government agencies, academic institutions, and beyond are encouraged to apply. While mentors are typically from companies and government agencies that already have a relationship with UMBC, The College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) or UMBC’s Career Center, no prior affiliation with UMBC is required—just a willingness to share time, skills, and insights.
