Olivia Amaral

CWIT Scholar, C18
Major: Computer Science
Expected Graduation: 2024

There is so much you can do with a Computer Science degree, and that is one of reasons why it excites me and why I love learning new things related to the field. In addition to this, CWIT has been a good support system to have in going through my major by doing things such as pairing me up with a peer mentor, a faculty mentor, providing access to CWIT advising, and introducing me to other women in my major as well. Especially during the duration of my freshman year, I loved living on the CWIT LLC (living learning community) and getting to know other women in my classes. It was so nice to be welcomed by the CWIT community and come into college having a good group of people that I already know. It is a very good support system to have, especially when going through a challenging major, and becoming a member of the CWIT community has had a huge positive impact on my college career thus far and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Describe a faculty or staff member who has made a positive impact on our time at UMBC

Dr. Benjamin Johnson has had a positive impact on my time at UMBC. In addition to having him as my professor for two different computer science courses, he is also my CWIT faculty mentor. He brings energy to the classroom and is passionate about what he teaches as a professor and is patient with students. As a mentor, he has been very supportive and its helpful to talk to him if I have questions about anything or want to share my experiences.
