Juanita Botonero-Murcia

CWIT Scholar, C16
Major: Computer Engineering
Graduation Year: 2021

Hello, my name is Juanita Botonero-Murcia and I am a C16 CWIT Scholar. I am a computer engineering major, with a possible minor in economics. Although I loved everything that had to do with the field of computer science, I always struggled in high school when it came to the subject. However, thanks to the support that the CWIT community brings, I am excelling in my first computer science course. In the past I have taken initiative in learning concepts of the field by using it as a topic for my high school International Baccalaureate requirements, such as my Internal Assessments and Extended Essay. For my Extended Essay I wrote a paper about the threat of quantum computing on internet security and encrypted data, and from then on I knew I wanted to do something in computing. My first semester at UMBC has been great so far, getting involved in both Chesapeake Community Council, and the Hispanic Latino Student Union – in which I have met some amazing friends. CWIT definitely gave me the boost I needed to get involved within the UMBC community!
